Jacky offered me a strategy which would help me avoid leaving my assignments and studying until the last minute, as I dashed off to clubs instead—set deadlines for small tasks within an assignment, which fall before the final deadline, in order to keep yourself on track. For example, if I have to do an assignment which requires research and writing, I’ll set a deadline for when I have to complete the research. Meeting a deadline like this actually makes me feel like I’m accomplished something, so I’m more motivated to continue with the rest of the project.
I’ve set aside two nights, Friday and Saturday night, on which I go out, and put them on my schedule. If someone asks me to go out another night, I have to either say no or sacrifice one of my Friday or Saturday nights in order to go out that night. I’ve been pretty good at sticking to my restricted partying times, because I’ve told my friends on the floor about them, and there’s always someone who will tell me to get back to my books if I try to go to an extra party. In one of the “Max Grades Min Effort” modules, Jacky recommends that if you want to be held accountable for a certain goal, you must talk to people you know about it. While I’ll never be the type of person who stays in all the time, I’ve come to enjoy it some nights; some of the books and poems I have to read for English class are actually pretty interesting, when I take the time to understand them.

Bad Studying Habits that Students Should Immediately Refrain from Doing

Every student has bad studying habits that they might not be even aware of, and there is a need to crush the bad habits immediately once spotted. You will never be able to achieve you goals unless you do something about the awful study habits.

Studying Habits that you Need to Replace:

Studying with friends might look like such a nice idea, but it will definitely pose some problems if you only get to spend 25% of the time for pure studying. In most occasion, you tend to socialize and spend the time gossiping than deal with more important matters. It will definitely become a hindrance unless you and your friends are serious in reaching certain goal.
Good music like classical music can calm the nerves which can also help you memorize the things that you need to remember without any trouble, but not if you constantly look for a new piece to listen to. Listening to music while studying is good but choose the piece that is calming instead of choosing the ones that create agitation which will definitely make you lose your focus.
Most students fail because of multi tasking – talking on the phone, texting, or chatting online while studying. You will not be able to properly grasp the essence of the reading material that you need to understand while doing something else at the same time. There is also a possibility of mixing them up and might make you retain the wrong information in your memory.
If the environment where you plan to study is not a good one, then chances are great that you will fail in absorbing the knowledge that you need to acquire. Don’t reason that you don’t have the luxury of time to look for a nice area to study your lessons. You are just wasting your time if you insist on studying where you are not comfortable – the chair is not good, dim lights, temperature is too hot or too cold, or unsuitable desk. Find a spot that can make you comfortable and make your efforts all worth it.
Studying while on your bed will definitely lure you to sleep. Sure it can provide the necessary comfort that you need but it can be too comfortable and your body will definitely give in to the temptation to fall asleep and make you forget all about studying. Be comfortable but not to the point of dozing off.
Cramming is probably the most popular habit among students which should end right away and without any delay. Most claim that they can grasp everything very well when cramming – that is the most unacceptable excuse that will surely bring any student on the road to failure. If you continue to have such reasons and thoughts, then you might soon be walking that road anytime soon.
Procrastination is also a favorite habit among students that usually give birth to cramming. Most students think that they have ample time in their hands and mimic the grasshopper that played all day when he should be gathering food to store for the rainy days. Instead of reviewing the lessons immediately, they put it off for another day and do unimportant things instead. Because they think they have lots of time to spare, they will never study until the last minute that will eventually lead to cramming.
Some students also study while commuting, but is it advisable to do such? It is only good if you are only reviewing the things that you have studied before. It is not a good habit if you are on the verge of studying the things that you need to memorize and you are not still familiar with them. Reading while on a moving vehicle can give you a headache and it will be hard for you to memorize what you have read.
Although you live in modern time with lots of modern gadgets and methods available including the net, you should not rely on it too much. Traditional research via reading a book is a sure way to find the answers to your questions. Publishers of printed book make it a point to deliver accurate information all the time. Although you can also search via the net, it cannot give you assurance that the information you are getting came from legitimate authority or they are based on facts.
Asking a friend for things that are not clear to you is not really a bad habit, but not if it becomes a usual habit. It’s like relying on a person to explain things to you when you can listen to them the first time. You will never be able to grasp the full information especially if the information is already considered second hand facts. Your friend might have grasped it differently from what was explained and you might have another interpretation to it. Listen well and be guided accordingly.
If you are practicing such habits, then you better stop now before it’s too late. There are still some studying habits that are considered unhealthy and you must try everything in your power to replace them with healthier alternative. It might be hard at first but once you got the hang of it, everything is just a piece of cake including passing.
